WEB HOSTING/FILE HOSTING LINKS...

I decided that my only startup costs for this website should be the time I spent making it. As a result, I accumulated a stack of links to free webhosts and filehosts, which I now pass on to you, the reader :) I try to check the links every so often, but sooner or later they break, so if you come across a 404 or find one of the sites has changed completely, don't mind too much ... or better yet, alert me to my oversight --here-- . That said - on to the links!

FREE WEB HOSTING:

Name Address Details
1ASPHost http://www.1asphost.com/ 100MB, 1GB monthly bandwidth, supposedly FTP but I've never found it. They put a small text link at the bottom of your page.
UPDATE: They've sold out. Now they have huge, hideous Adsense and Dotster ads -sighs- . On the plus side, they've removed the text links.
DeluXeHost http://www.dhost.info/ 100MB, 300GB monthly bandwidth, FTP, no ads, but as slow as syrup, and they'll drop your site without warning if you don't get at least 1 hit/week.
UPDATE: They've added ads, although you can choose where to place them using the supplied html code.
RegisterFly http://www.registerfly.com/ With every domain name purchase you get 100MB (they say 1GB before you buy the domain, but they're lying), 100MB 'transfer' (I really, really hope that's daily and not monthly), no FTP, but no ads either. Doesn't support Macromedia Flash.
... Grr. I can't bring myself to recommend these guys. See under "Free Domain Stuff" for the grisly details.
110MB http://www.110mb.com/ 5GB, 300GB monthly bandwidth, FTP access, no ads, with an option on domain hosting. Comes highly recommended.
i6NETWORKS http://www.i6networks.com/ 5GB, 1000GB (yes, gigabytes) monthly bandwidth, FTP access, no ads, full cpanel control. You need to own a domain (you don't get a subdomain address) which has been active for at least three months, and only 'normal' filetypes are accepted.
UPDATE: You CAN set custom .html error pages through .htaccess - just ignore the option to create error messages through the cpanel as it doesn't work properly.
1stFreeHosting.com http://www.1stfreehosting.com/ 20GB, 20GB monthly bandwidth, FTP access, no ads, with an option on domain hosting. Also highly recommended.
Host Ultra http://www.hostultra.com/ 'Unlimited' space and bandwidth, but a pitiful 1MB file size limit and a ton of rules. I seem to recall they have ads, too.

Note: I discovered a whole load more free web hosting sites, but these are the ones I've investigated personally. Here's a bunch I never bothered using, but which you may wish to try:

Name Address Details
50Webs http://www.50webs.com/ 60MB, 'unlimited' bandwidth initially set at 100MB/day - 3GB/month (filesize?), claims no ads.
Byethost.com http://www.byethost.com/ Differing plans: you can get 250MB, 30GB of bandwidth, infinite subdomains, etc., but not all at once (filesize? FTP?). No ads.
UPDATE: Now it's 250MB, 6GB of bandwidth, 5 sub-domains, 3 MySQL databases, so a mix of the original plans.
FreeWebTown http://www.freewebtown.com/ 2GB, 2GB monthly bandwidth (ouch, the worst ratio yet), FTP access (filesize?).
Fizwig.com http://www.fizwig.com/ 5GB, 10GB monthly bandwidth, FTP access, but probably has ads. Instant activation.
Speqo http://www.speqo.com/ 5GB, 50GB monthly bandwidth, but doesn't say anything about FTP access and requires you to be an active member on the forums. No ads.
Free-Site-Host http://www.free-site-host.com/ 5GB, 100GB monthly bandwidth, FTP access, and claims "no forced ads on your page" (which probably means pop-ups instead). No idea for filesize.
UnlimitedMB.com http://www.unlimitedmb.com/ 5GB, 500GB monthly bandwidth (eek), FTP access, but seems to have pop-up ads. No idea on the filesize.

To contrast:

Name Address Details
Geocities http://geocities.yahoo.com/ 15MB, buggy ad box, 3GB/month bandwidth, no FTP, 5MB file size limit.
Angelfire http://www.angelfire.lycos.com/ 20MB, frame & pop-up ads, 1GB/month bandwidth, no FTP, no file size limit.
Tripod http://www.tripod.lycos.com/ Varies.
Fortunecity http://www.fortunecity.com/ Varies.

Tripod and Fortunecity are a lottery depending on your chosen nation. Tripod varies from a puny 12MB to 50MB, always with ads, apparently unmetered bandwidth, and file size limits of 8MB-unlimited. Fortunecity varies from 25-100MB, always with ads, bandwidth ranging from 3GB/month to apparently unmetered, and file size limits of 1MB-3MB (sometimes with further restrictions on the size of image and text files - e.g. the main version of Fortunecity has a 3MB file size limit, but caps images at only 1MB, and html/txt at a measly 500kb!

FREE FILE HOSTING:

Name Address Details
File Den http://www.fileden.com/ The current king of the free filehosts in terms of reliability if not actual service provided. 1GB of space per user, 5GB monthly bandwidth, 50MB file size cap for registered users, files never expire, direct linking allowed (including image hosting and MP3 streaming!).
Box.net http://www.box.net/ 1GB of space per user, unlimited bandwidth, but a 10MB file size cap. Furthermore, you can't direct link.
eSnips.com http://www.esnips.com/ 1GB of space, unlimited bandwidth, 100MB file size limit (50MB for zipped files, for some reason). I'm also fairly sure you can't direct link.
UPDATE: They're up to 5GB of space per person; I assume the rest has been upgraded too.
SnapDrive.NET http://www.snapdrive.net/ 2GB of space, 100GB of monthly bandwidth, 100MB file size limit, files never expire, direct linking allowed.
UPDATE: Down to 500MB monthly bandwidth.
UPDATE: They're now advertising 5GB of space for free accounts, but they don't seem to have upgraded old accounts.
Up For Down http://www.upfordown.com/ 20GB of space, 25GB of monthly bandwidth (50GB in the first month), 200MB file size limit, files never expire, direct linking allowed.
Badongo http://www.badongo.com/ Essentially unlimited space and bandwidth (no download limit), 1GB file size limit. They used to keep files indefinitely, but now will delete them if they don't get downloaded at least once every 30 days.
FileFront http://www.filefront.com/ Unlimited everything - space, bandwidth, file size, files kept forever ... but they leap on anything they even suspect might be copyrighted (and from the horror stories I've heard, even accuse innocent users of uploading 'warez' so they can clear space on their hard drives). Use with extreme caution.

...Aaand the stuff I never bothered to use (I've registered on a few but didn't bother uploading):

Name Address Details
fileUPYOURS http://www.fileupyours.com/ 100MB of space, apparently unlimited bandwidth, no file type or size restrictions, files never expire, direct linking allowed.
File Host http://www.filehost.ro/ Essentially unlimited space and bandwidth (no upload limit), 100MB file size limit. Everything else is unknown.
MediaFire http://www.mediafire.com/ Essentially unlimited space and bandwidth (no upload limit), no file size limit. Everything else is unknown.
UPDATE: Now a 100MB file size limit.
DivShare http://www.divshare.com/ Essentially unlimited space and bandwidth (no upload limit), no file size limit. Files allegedly never expire.
FilePlanet http://www.fileplanet.com/ Unlimited everything, but uploads need to be personally vetted by an admin (i.e. fuggetaboudit).

If you can't find what you want above, try the following sites:

Absolutely Free Hosting - www.absolutely-free-hosting.com/ - Features one of the better free web hosting search engines out there.

FreeWebspace.net - http://www.freewebspace.net/ - Check out the forums for the newest offers.

Free Webhosts - www.free-webhosts.com/ - Again, great advanced search feature, although it lacks most of the new crop of free webhosts. It also allows you to submit reviews of your experiences and read what other people have to say about a webhost.

FREE DOMAIN STUFF:

Free Redirects:

Name Address Details
TiPDOTS.COM http://www.tipdots.com/ Free redirects in the form YOURNAME.us.tp, YOURNAME.uk.tp, etc.
Ulimit http://www.ulimit.com/ Free redirects in the form YOURNAME.t2u.com, YOURNAME.clan.st, etc. There are adverts (superimposed over your site with an ugly frame), and you can forget about the email support unless you are a fluent French speaker. Example: http://sregan.clan.st (redirects to my 1asphost page). It also has path forwarding, and so recognises requests in the form YOURNAME.clan.st/page.html (try it out at http://sregan.clan.st/FATM.htm) - you could theoretically build your site's links around this feature, giving the impression you've got DNS support (unless someone looks too closely at their status bar whilst pages are loading).
UPDATE: It seems --1ASPHost's--  crappy new ads don't like co-existing with Ulimit's crappy old ads - my main page no longer loads through sregan.clan.st.
UPDATE: Working again. Now it seems Ulimit's ads overwrite and so remove --1ASPHost's-- ads - I actually prefer Ulimit's.
CJB.NET http://www.cjb.net/ Free redirects in the form YOURNAME.cjb.net. Also provides some fairly minimal web hosting.
JOYNIC http://www.joynic.com/ Free redirects in the form YOURNAME.us.tt, YOURNAME.uk.tt, etc.
you.co.nr http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ Free redirects in the form YOURNAME.co.nr. Requires something like 1 visitor per month, also requires you to put a link to them on your front page. You can also register tlds with them for $3 per year.
Biz.ly http://www.biz.ly/ Free redirects in the form YOURNAME.biz.ly, also provides 50mb free hosting and e-mail forwarding with every free subdomain.
smartdots.com http://www.smartdots.com/ Free redirects in the form YOURNAME.us.tc, YOURNAME.uk.tc, YOURNAME.net.tc, etc.

Note: there are literally TONS of redirects like this, and providing an exhaustive list is WAY beyond my humble site's remit. Vanilla redirects aren't that great anyway - far better to get a subdomain with DNS support.

Free DNS-Supported Subdomains:

Name Address Details
UNI.CC Network http://www.uni.cc/ A free DNS-supported subdomain in the form YOURNAME.uni.cc.
NIC.BIZ.LY http://nic.biz.ly/ Same as the www.biz.ly, but with DNS service (like .uni.cc) and the option to create further subdomains of your subdomain :)
ZA NiC http://www.za.net/ A free DNS-supported subdomain in the form YOURNAME.za.net. Requires you to fill out an application form and submit it by email.
FreeDNS http://freedns.afraid.org/ Dozens of possible redirects and DNS-supported subdomains (take a look --here-- for some examples), with an option to get unlimited subdomains for your own domains, even if your current domain host places a cap on how many you can create (the catch is that other people can get subdomains off of your domain too).

Free Second Level Domains:

Name Address Details
FEEFREEDOMAINS http://www.feefreedomains.org.uk/ Free second-level domains in the form YOURNAME.net.ru, YOURNAME.org.ru. Haven't been able to get this to work.
NIC Argentina http://www.nic.ar/ Free second-level domains in the form YOURNAME.com.ar, YOURNAME.net.ar, YOURNAME.org.ar, etc. Haven't been able to get this to work (it's all in Spanish and apparently requires a valid Argentinian address and phone number).

Free Top Level Domains:

Name Address Details
Dot TK http://www.dot.tk/ A free top-level domain in the form YOURNAME.tk. Redirect only (you don't actually own it, and you don't get DNS service unless you pay for it). You also need something like 25 visitors a day or something ridiculous. There are ads, but apparently you can turn them off.
1&1 Internet Inc. http://1and1.com Free .info name, but only for the first year (presumably they then charge a high renewal fee to recoup their losses from people who leave after first year).
UPDATE: I think they've stopped offering free .info domains.
dotWORLDS http://www.dotworlds.net/ Free alternate root domain name system: anything@anything.anything. However, only those who have installed the dotworlds browser plugin can see your sites (the plugin tells your browser to go to the dotworlds server instead of US monopoly site --InterNIC-- ), and you can forget about getting your site onto Google, Altavista, etc.

If none of the above tickle your fancy, why not try the list --here-- ? There seem to be a good number of free-ish domain sites, although some come into the "earn" category below by virtue of asking you to complete offers or even buy stuff from their advertisers (at which point I wouldn't bother, since it's effectively "get a domain free with this item" by proxy).

Earn Top Level Domains:

Name Address Details
Ezyrewards http://www.ezyrewards.com/ One of the things you can earn by completing offers is free domains.
Stormpay http://www.stormpay.com/ Stormpay's Stormclix program allows you to earn money for RegisterFly purchases by clicking on ads.
UPDATE: It looks like they're no longer running Stormclix and seem to have gone over to an all-auction format.
RegisterFly http://www.registerfly.com/ ...stinks. No, really.

A quick --Google-- for "RegisterFly sucks" will reveal that my position on RegisterFly is by no means unique. I registered a couple of domains with them purely because a.) they accepted Stormpay (letting me convert clicks into domains), b.) they were amazingly cheap (.info domains cost $1.69, $0.60 during a sale, although the price goes up sharply when you try and renew your domains), and c.) I had picked up a free .be domain during their promotion last year because I expected to get a 1GB website (in fact, it's 100MB and doesn't support Flash - see under the "Free Web Hosting" section).

Well, I fell into the oldest trick in the book - pay peanuts, get monkeys. First they refused to change my DNS settings. Then they changed my whois information so the owner of my domains was listed as "RegisterFly" (hmm...). "RegisterFly" apparently lived in Pakistan and had an obscene email address (I wasn't alone in getting this 'special treatment' - save a tear for the Christian Evangelical site --Love America Back-- , who ended up with the same perverted email address added to their whois information). Fighting the urge to shower RegisterFly with invective, I calmly changed my whois information from the perverted Pakistani default.

Guess what? My email address 'mysteriously' found its way onto the whois information of every domain currently using Registerfly's default profile. My email address was showered with spam mail and requests to purchase bandwidth from sites I didn't even own. Even more incredibly, I was being sent transfer information for these domains, often complete with usernames and passwords! Now, I could have abused this situation by holding these domains to ransom or entering their account and transferring them to myself (one fellow victim of RegisterFly suggested I demand that they transfer all domains bearing my email address to me, then sell them on Ebay, but as I pointed out, the owners of these domains had done nothing wrong). Instead, I helped out everyone who contacted me, and repeatedly asked Registerfly to remove my name from their database, but nothing doing! Their support staff is, quite frankly, brain-dead (when I told them they had appended my email address to domains I did not own, they told me I could protect 'my' whois details by purchasing ProtectFly which lets you -gasp- USE THE DAMN DEFAULT PROFILE, WHICH NOW LISTS ME AS THE CONTACT ADDRESS!).

I still receive spam mail and the occasional "I wish to purchase X domain from you" mail to this day. Nevertheless, I include them here for their low cost and ability to accept Stormpay. Use them at your own risk, you will almost certainly be ripped off, spammed, or forced to fend off lawsuits directed at domains you do not even own (As happened to me during this sordid little saga. Twice.)
